Jay Kurima

Since the birth of my son, Zack, I have committed myself to creating a better world. It is my belief that a quality and equitable education for all is the fundamental foundation for building a society of understanding, intelligent, and caring individuals. I began fulfilling this goal as a science educator in the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD). During this tenure, I have taught: Anatomy and Physiology, AP Biology, Biology, AP Environmental Science, Environmental Systems, Integrated Physics and Chemistry, Pre-AP Physics, AP Physics B and C, and International Internship

To further this foundation of understanding, I proudly developed curriculum for the award winning Fort Worth Sister Cities’ International Leadership Academy. The goal of this program is to develop multicultural friendships by bringing high school and University students from our Sister Cities to Fort Worth to work collaboratively on challenging global topics. I have also had the honor to take high school students to Mexico, Japan, and Italy to further their personal, international experiences. Informal educational experiences are key components of a quality education.

Along my journey, to better the world, I have held many positions: AP Master Teacher, Science Lead Content Teacher, District Science Specialist, Science Department Chair, American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Chemistry in the Community facilitator, Technology Instructional Educator, Pasco Teacher Educator, and Cambridge Physics Outlet Physics Committee Member...

Currently, I strive to improve the world in several ways. One is through my occupation as a Science Teacher for Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences (TABS), where I work directly with amazing students to build their foundation and appreciation of science.  Another way I impact the world is through my work with the Advancement via Individual Determination's (AVID) National program. As a curriculum developer and professional development facilitator, I work with teachers from around the nation and globe to build and diversify their pedagogy.  I have also been on the interview committee for the prestigious Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF).  This non profit organization is driven to find and support the brightest and most educated science teachers to mold and develop the science leaders of tomorrow.  I have also been on the committee to review items on the Texas high stake exams. As a committee we were charged with the task of insuring a fair and credible way to asses student learning. I have also reviewed several textbooks including Friedland and Relyea Environmental Science for AP, CPO's Physics First, CPO's Foundations of Physics.

In the guiding light of Mahatma Gandhi’s words, “Be the change you want to see in the world”, I know I must improve myself and my skills as a science educator. Therefore, I am working on my Master’s degree in Science Education from Texas Christian University, where I previously earned a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science.
